Genesis 2:9 tells us that there were two trees in the garden, the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, and the tree of Life.In Genesis 2:16-17,God said,"And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, of every tree of the garden you may freely eat;but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat,for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die." In Genesis3:6-7, you can see that Adam and Eve ate of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. And in verse 7," Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked;and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves coverings." In an attempt to restore their righteousness before God, Adam and Eve, sewed fig leaves together as a covering. Many people today are still sewing fig leaves together in a effert to make themselves righteous before God. The tree of the knowledge of good and evil represents the "law", it represents the natural man, it represents justification by works. Romans 3:20 says, "Therefore, by the deeds of the law, no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin." Trying to be saved by the law is a fig leaf. It is a salvation you are trying to earn.It is not true righteousness,it is self righteousness. Paul says in Philippians 3:8-9,"that I may gain Christ and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith. (The tree of Life).
