The first chapter of John 1;6-9 says that ' there was a man whose name was John, and that this man came to bear witness of the Light, that all, through Him might believe. He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. That was the true Light which Lighteth every man who comes into the world. This Light the bible is refering to is, of course, Jesus. Proverbs 20-27 says that 'the spirit of man is the candle of the Lord,' but in order for a candle to have light it must be lit. You see, if you are alive in this world, it is because you have had a physical birth. In John 3;3, Jesus tells Nicodemus, that in order to see the kingdom of God, man must also have spiritual birth. In other words, our candle (spirit) must be lit by Jesus.'He is the true Light, which gives Light to every man who comes into the world,John 1;9.
There are many ways that the bible describes the new birth. In John 3;7-8, Jesus says to Nicodemus, 'do not marval that I say to you, you must be born again. The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but can not tell;where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is a born of the Spirit." In Colossians 1:26, Paul describes the born again experience as a mystery which has been hidden from ages and from generation, and verse 27, Paul says "this mystery among the gentiles is Christ in you, the hope of glory". Paul tells us in Titus 3:5 that not by works of righteousness which we have done but according to His mercy, He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit. The not by works of righteousness which we have done tells us that we can not earn God's salvation, but that we receive it through His mercy. The washing of regeneration is described in 2 Corinthians 5:17, Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. Do you realize when we are born of the Spirit, God actually regenerates our human spirit. Old things are passed away, behold all things have become new. In Ephesians 4:24, Paul tells us that you put on the new man which is created according to God in righteousness and true holiness. This means when we are born of God this is actually Christ living in us. In 1John 5:11-12, it says that Eternal life is in His Son and that he who has the Son has life.
How do we receive this life? The answer is in Romans 10:9-10. It says" that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes into righteousness and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation". I believe that Romans 10;9-10,relates directly to Revelations 3;20,'Behold I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door I will come into him and dine with him and he will dine with Me.' You see the key to this scripture is that we hear His voice and that we open the door. God is a gentleman, He will not barge His way into our heart. We must open the door to His salvation by doing what it says in Romans 10;9-10.If you have never asked Jesus into your heart, or if you are not sure, I invite you to ask Him into your heart. If today you hear His voice harden not your heart. Hebrews 3;7-8.
